the government minister who, before the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, was head of the ↑judiciary (= all the judges) in England and Wales. This role now belongs to the Lord Chief Justice. the choice of judges, which was the former responsibility of the Lord Chancellor, is now made by the Judicial Appointments Commission. The Lord Chancellor is the Secretary of State for Justice and, if a member of the ↑House of Lords, may also be the Lord ↑Speaker in the ↑House of Lords, who sits on the ↑Woolsack.
